You may have noticed that the long sleeves & pants are back again. When I posted about taking all the long sleeved shirts out of his closet for the summer Roberta made the following comment:

    Kids know what they like just like we do...perhaps Simon likes the "security" long sleeves gives him...it's a tactile thing...feels like a big hug. If you're worried about him being "hot"...look at all the people in the world living in the desert...all wear long blk/white sleeves to protect their skin. As mothers we try to protect our children...but being a mother of a LD child whom we used to call "The Taz" because he would throw terrible fits...trust me...when you let go and let me...allow them to be who they are...everyone is happier:}

She made some points I hadn't considered (especially about people in desert climates who long sleeves to protect their skin) and it actually made me adjust my outlook on the situation. Thanks Roberta for adding your comments. We are all feeling a little happier around here...but we did draw the line when he wanted to wear his winter/ski coat outside today when it was 90+ degrees.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend. Giveaways will be posted tomorrow morning.

    For Today : June 21st

    Hello
[ this is real life : circle cut-out photo mask available at Designer Digitals ]

Love this simple documentation idea from The Simple Woman's Day Book via apple likes orange:

    FOR TODAY
    June 21st, 2009

Outside my window...my red leaf lettuce is waiting to harvested.

I am thinking...about the content for my upcoming 3-month workshop at Big Picture Scrapbooking called Yesterday & Today & that it is just about time for bed.

I am thankful for...things we don't ask for (or think we want) but get anyway & weekends like this where the four of us are all together with no agenda other than to simply be together.

From the kitchen...ribs tonight cooked low & slow from a Paula Dean recipe (loved it) and ten small jars of freezer jam all ready to go.

I am wearing...jeans & a blue top with white stitching & no shoes.

I am creating...layouts for my column in the October issue of Creating Keepsakes.

I am going...to have some jello for dessert.

I am reading...The Three Marriages (recommended by Jen Lemen)

I am hoping...that both kids will be well enough to go to the babysitter's tomorrow so I can get some things done.

I am hearing...Chris' iphone playing Learning To Fly (Tom Petty) while he checks his email.

Around the house...there is a large pile of cloth diapers on the couch waiting to be put away.

One of my favorite things...is that Simon fell asleep across Chris' lap tonight as the three of us sat here on the couch after Anna had gone to bed. I scratched his back and he was out. I think he gets that from me - I love having my back scratched.

A few plans for the rest of the week...work tomorrow, playdate with Tricia and her kids on Tuesday, Paolo here for a visit on Wednesday, doctor's appointments on Thursday, work Friday

    A picture to share...

    Signs of Summer

Our first CSA (community supported agriculture) farm share box from Groundworks Orgaincs came yesterday. Included in the box: red leaf lettuce, 2 cucumbers, carrots, basil, new potatoes, strawberries, sweet onions, sugar snap peas, and garlic whistles. To find a farm to support in your area check out Local Harvest.

The removal of long-sleeved shirts from Simon's closet (much to his chagrin). He is a big fan of "longs" as he calls them. After having a bunch of morning battles over which shirt he was going to wear ("I do not like short sleeve shirts" with a very mad face) we took all the long sleeve shirts out of his closet for the summer. The last couple of days have seen better behavior in the mornings as he adjusts to the choices he has available.

The countdown-to-summer school calendar (with green "x's" for "in green" days). Hard to believe he is almost done with First Grade.

Flip flops have begun appearing here and there in the usual spots we leave our shoes.

My own little vegetable + herb spot. We had a friend build some raised beds for us in our backyard last month but I am waiting to use them until we do a few other things back there (like have a patio put in and other landscaping stuff). I have always been a fan of container gardening and have done tomatoes in the past. Definitely excited to have our own stash of mint, parsley, rosemary, and cilantro.

Sun rompers & sun dresses (the girls clothes are really so much more fun...). Anna is one of those babies that runs really warm and as the temperatures heat up outside I am loving these cute options.

Grab your camera today and document some of the signs of summer around your house (or winter if you are in the Southern Hemisphere). Hoping to put this content together into a layout soon.

    Family Swimming Adventures

    Swim1

For as long as I can remember swimming has been a part of my life. It's a huge part of my personal history: I swam for fun, competed into college, taught lessons, and coached at different points in my life.

Swimming has become a past time that we enjoy as a family. We are lucky to have an awesome indoor pool called the Tamarack Wellness Center available for family swims a bunch of different times during the week. It's an indoor, salt-water therapeutic pool with a water temperature of 92 degrees. Yes, 92.

We first started going to Tamarack a few years ago when Simon was receiving services through the local early intervention agency EC Cares. Since then we have been fairly regular at different parts of the year and it has become one of Simon's favorite activities.

    Swim3

During the winter it's awesome because it is so nice and warm. During the summer it's awesome because most people are outside and it's a lot less crowded.

    Swim2

Simon is so happy now that we are all going again. Waiting for Anna to be old enough probably felt like forever when you are living in "kid" time. He and Chris went a few times on their own but I think it's just more fun when we all go.

    Swim4

We took Anna to the pool for the first time just about a month ago. She's a total water baby and is happy to be in the water both at home in the tub and in the pool. Again, that warm water is a total benefit especially for little ones.

Yesterday I remembered to take the camera and was rewarded with awesome light coming in from the windows and an almost empty pool.

I am so very thankful we have a place we can go that seems such a great fit for our family.

    Documenting The Kids

    Simon @ 7 years
    - worked super hard for over three weeks to have three days "in green" for a reward trip to Target to get some legos (staying in green means following directions, no pushing, no arguing about who is first in line, accepting, etc)
    - playing with the neighbor kids outside almost everyday after school: riding bikes, playing chase
    - doing single number addition worksheets super-fast (and correctly)
    - ate green peppers & broccoli
    - working on accepting not being first in line after recess everyday + found a solution by holding hands (and sharing first) with the little girl you compete with the most
    - lost your first tooth (you pulled it out all on your own)

    Anna @ 3 months
    - smiling a ton, especially when Simon comes into view
    - liking very much to be held rather than in any other spot
    - rolled over from stomach to back
    - working on getting into a routine
    - moved from the bassinet next to our bed to the crib in your own room
    - had your first adventure to the 92 degree swimming pool (you loved it)
    - started hanging out with a very special babysitter twice a week

A nap & a stretch or two (or more).

    Baby
    And a bath.

    Other weekend memories to remember:
    • Picking up some new peony plants at our favorite local nursery that just opened for the season.
    • Going on a walk to the park with Anna in the stroller, Simon on his bike, and Lily on the leash.
    • Shopping for lettuce and flowers at the Farmer's Market.
    • Eating fresh salmon caught in the morning for dinner on Saturday.
    • Breakfast early Sunday morning at our local hangout.
    • Simon riding his bike with the neighbor kids and looking so, so tall.
    • Making him change his clothes to a short sleeve t-shirt and shorts because the weather was phenomenal.
    • Digging in the backyard and dreaming about the changes I want to make out there (more projects).

Easter Sunday : Photos + Words

    Easter1

Easter morning began bright and early about 6:30am. There was lots of talk in our big bed about eggs and bunny's and whether one large bunny had left anything for the kids. After going out to the living room Simon discovered that, indeed, the bunny had been here.

The first thing he pulled from his basket, and the thing he would love the most all day, was the little packet of Star Wars legos. He got to work immediately (forget the candy, give me the legos) following the instructions and assembling the ship with very minimal assistance.

Here in the Northwest most Easters tend to be rainy. This one was no exception. I could hear it pounding on the roof even before we got out of bed. I knew there would be no outside egg hunting this year.

    Easter2

So what's a bunny to do?

Simple: hide the eggs inside in other parts of the house while the child is engrossed in building a Star Wars lego ship and then announce that the bunny must have known that the child does not enjoy the rain and as a result hid the eggs inside this year. As you can see above, "hiding" really means placing the eggs out in the open so they will all be found.

    Easter3

This all sounded totally good to Simon.

    Easter4

He searched around and found every last one.

    Easter5

And then proceeded to count them all as they went back into the cartons (gotta love real-life math).

During most of this time Anna was still sleeping, oblivious as she should be to the hunting and gathering.
After the main festivities were completed we started the process of getting ready for church and the rest of the day.

    Easter7

I got Anna all dressed up and then she took another little nap before we headed to Mass.

Have I said yet that I really like having a little girl?

Mass was super crowded as is usually the case on Easter Sunday. We had planned to leave earlier than usual to make sure we got our favorite seat but it didn't quite work out like that (no one in particular to blame - we were all slow). We ended up in the back corner which was basically the baby & small child corner. The family next to us had a little girl just four days younger than Anna and an older daughter that was almost four. Another family had two small girls. The place was packed.

After Mass we headed over to Chris' parents for the afternoon.

    Easter8

There was some nice Dad & Daughter time while watching the Masters.

    Easter9

And some nice Grandpa & Grandson time while breaking down and rebuilding the Star Wars lego ship.

    Easter10

And a bunch of baby smiles for Grandma.

    Easter11

And much to Simon's delight, the Easter Bunny also made a stop at Grandma & Grandpa's house. By this time the rain had stopped so an outside hunt worked out perfectly.

The rest of the afternoon & early evening included good conversation and great food. Anna napped on and off throughout the day as is her usual way.

    Easter12

Simon crashed after dinner in one of those crazy kid positions. We woke him up to go home and he was bummed because he had wanted to watch the Horton movie (which he did end up watching once we got home).

It was a really good, really full Easter Sunday. Especially full of the thing we love best: family.

    Dottedline

Have you documented your Easter (or your Sunday) yet? Take a couple minutes today to jot down your story while it is still fresh in your mind or use your photos as a guide to help guide your story as I did above. The content included here will be the basis for a layout soon.

    Everyday.

    Three

    She's six weeks old today.

Zoom. It's going so very fast.

Constantly cleaning or dealing with spit up, poop & breast-milk; hearing Simon say "looks like trouble" when Anna begins to make any sort of crying noise; tons of snuggling and adoring; changing my own clothes as many times as I change hers; fitting a bit of work in between feeding & naps & playing & cooking & housework; watching love grow right in front of my eyes; carting two kids to doctor's appointments (both mine and theirs); going to the grocery store (and having it start pouring down rain as soon as I get there so I get to carry the car seat through the pouring rain) as the big exciting outing of the day; feeling so thankful to have such an involved husband (and a baby that is really very mellow overall)...all these are the current reality of my everyday.

All joys of a very small baby in my world right now.

This experience so far has been completely different than life with Simon as an infant. Even though my memory is foggy looking back seven years ago, I remember it to be so much more challenging. It was more challenging. In my memory he cried harder and louder. I had no idea what I was doing with a tiny baby. I was so, so tired and that impacted everything.

My expectations this time around are completely different. My approach is slower and calmer. I know myself better and I am less-stressed out (even with more on my plate). I know my limits. I take deeper breaths.

He taught me so much (and continues to teach us new things all the time).

It hasn't been perfect by any means, and yet, it is perfect.

    Dottedline_2

It's Spring Break here this week and Simon can be found hanging out in his sleeping bag chatting about wanting to go camping. Chris has been researching new tents big enough for a family of four. I have been daydreaming about setting up raised beds for a vegetable garden in our empty backyard.

I've got a couple projects going on my table right now. They are tended to in little chunks of time here and there. The desire is definitely there, it's that whole "finding the time" thing that is the current issue. Soon I will need to get a little more serious about finding a new work at home balance once again.

For now, we continue to get to know each other. Simon continues to teach Anna about the world and Star Wars and Baby Einstein and McDonalds. I continue to spend a good deal of time hanging out on the couch or walking around with her in my arms whispering love notes into her delicate little ears.

And of course, taking lots of photos to document the experience when I can make the time.
