    Six Things: Travel

    6Things

Tis the season for travel (or dreams of travel) and adventure.

Last night I did a little online shopping to collect some travel related products for an upcoming family gathering. I was reminded once again that what I have always loved about travel themed products is that they can often be used on a variety of different projects. They are great for pages documenting the journey and adventure of life - definitely one of my favorite themes.

Here are a few travel-related products that made their way into my cart:

    (1) EK Success Airplane Punch : This would be great for punching little accents to create some consistency in a travel journal. It might also be fun to use one of these to punch out a collection of papers from a trip and create a collage similar to the framed butterfly piece.

    (2) Little Yellow Bicycle 12x12 Snapshot Overlay : This would be so cool as the cover of a mini-album of favorite photos.

    (3) Reminisce Travel Icons Cardstock Stickers : I think these are the ones I am most excited to see in person - love the idea of them and hope that they are as cool as I think they will be.

    (4) Little Yellow Bicycle Film Strips : These will be cool as photo overlays but also as homes for little embellishments.

    (5) Making Memories Great Escape Collection Spiral Journaling Book : Still love this product concept and have the Valentine's book sitting on my table right now.

    (6) American Crafts Travel Flair : I admit to using these button-type embellishments a bunch lately. They are a nice pop of color and I love circle accents. There's also a second travel-themed set here.

Ever since I first began scrapbooking I have been a fan of Hero Arts. This set still remains one of my all time favorites. I love them even more for being a certified green business.

This week, on July 15th, Hero Arts is unveiling a new look and new features on their website. To celebrate they are having a whole week of cool stuff happening on their blog (which is a great place to go anytime for challenges, contests, and stamping ideas).

In addition, if you head over to their blog today and leave a comment that includes the initials AE you will be entered in a drawing for the basket of stamp goodness shown above (they sent this basket to me after Anna was born - such a fun, thoughtful gift idea).

Congratulations on your re-design Hero Arts! I can't wait to see it later this week.

    Family Treasures

    DOC250_Left5519

Meet Marie & Neil McDougall, my paternal grandparents.

Last night I got a message on Facebook from my cousin Rob (gotta love modern day communication). He's been going through hundreds of photos from my Dad's side of the family and recently started the process of scanning them. He uploaded the first batch of 100 and I went through them all, image by image, with the biggest smile on my face.

    DOC250_Left5567

    This is my family.

    My history.

    My treasure.

    DOC250_Left5560
I had no idea my cousin had been working on this project.

    I actually feel kinda speechless.

    DOC250_Left5565
So often I have looked through photos like these at antique stores and have wondered about the people and their stories and their families.

    DOC250_Left5564
These are my people. My Dad is the little guy on the right in the photo above.

I love the ones like this where there is a group gathered. It would be cool to make a little book of the group photos over the years since I have a handful from my childhood through today.

    DOC250_Left5563
    These are my grandparents.

    DOC250_Left5555
So what am I going to do with these? I am not quite sure yet. Most likely they will be integrated into layouts/projects for my upcoming Big Picture class about scrapbooking Yesterday & Today (the timing could not have been much better). I am hoping to get some stories from my Dad and go from there. I would also love to enlarge a few of them (that first one for sure) to hang in my home.

    These are really special treasures.

    Photography is so, so cool.

    Pages In Progress

    IMG_0597
[ yep, she closes her eyes just like her mama when she smiles ]

Right now I've got three pages in progress (and of course many others on my list of stories I want to tell) on my desktop. Most of the time when I showcase layouts here they are completed and ready to go into an album or uploaded to the printer. Today I wanted to share a couple that are in different stages and talk a bit about where I am going with each one.

Sometimes when I scrapbook my layouts come together quickly and easily. Other times it takes quite a bit longer with significantly more effort. When I first started scrapbooking things seemed to come together a lot faster. Today I find that I have at least a few pages going at all times in various stages of completion that can be there for weeks before being finished.

Why take a look at pages in progress?

    (1) It's cool to see that things have a way of working themselves out just by leaving them alone for awhile.
    (2) It's always great to remember that there are so many different ways a layout can come together (that whole "no right or wrong" thing).

When I am putting a layout together and I start getting bored or dissatisfied with the process I often just set it to the side and work on something else. There is something about setting the whole thing aside, letting it marinate a bit more, that allows the elements to come together to tell a more complete story.

Sometimes the whole thing ends up coming together in a completely different manner then I initially envisioned. I'm cool with that. It's part of the process of being open and flexible while still making sure that I am really communicating what matters most.

I try not to mess around with the elements too much. The more I mess around (moving things around, debating between this paper or that one, etc) the longer things take, the less confident I am in my choices, and the less satisfied I feel with the entire experience. I don't have a specific limit on the number of changes I make during any given project, but I can tell when I am stalling rather than just sticking it down (or placing it digitally) and moving on. When I feel myself stalling I either force myself to move forward or that's when I will set the page aside for awhile.

This image of Anna above is one I worked on last night. The layout began with the photo. I saw it. I loved it. I had to use it for something (most likely it will also be printed and framed to hang in the house). For the layout it's going to be printed big and added to a traditional paper page. In my head right now I see this photo either set flush at the top or bottom of a 12x12 page with a patterned paper that has a bit of light green either below or above. Additional journaling will likely be in strips.

Here's a couple other digital pages that I am working on right now:

    Motherchildren

This one started off as this template from Katie Pertiet. What's left of it now is the stitched frame and the concept of the three photos placed side by side (a good reminder that templates and sketches are excellent jumping off points). The word art is also Katie's and can be found here.

What's missing for me on this one is some journaling. I am also thinking about adding a bit of separation between the photos (just a thin dividing line between each one - maybe white). Most likely the journaling will go around the edges of the photo gathering in the spots not already occupied by the word art. I might change the blue patterned paper but most likely I will leave it. It's working just fine.

    AE_BabyCirclesLayout

Here's another one I started working on yesterday. It could still change quite a bit before I send it off to be printed. I wanted to experiment with my new half-circle number embellishments and get of some of these everyday shots of Anna included in a project.

I am considering adding in a larger photo for contrast (maybe inside that big text circle) and will make sure I get some journaling added in there somewhere. My initial vision for the journaling is a long narrow text box that would be aligned between the second and third circles (closer to the third). This page currently includes pink paper from this pack and my baby text circles.

So when is a layout done? For me it's when I feel like I have told the story I want to tell. Sometimes those stories have a ton of words and other times just a few.

Do you have pages in progress marinating too? Don't forget to go back to them. Fresh eyes are often all they need to reach completion.

Once I finish these three above I will post them again.

    Hello Wednesday.

    6a00d8341c5c3753ef011570e575cb970c-500wi

Had a little girl chat with Cathy and Aidan this morning (technology is awesome when it's working - I am hoping the computer issues I have been having lately have finally passed).

Working on my Big Picture class today along with planning some upcoming blog posts. Thanks for all the suggestions the other day about what you would like to see - many of them will be incorporated into the workshop. I will post additional details as they become available (cost, etc). I am feeling really good about getting back into the groove with this class and actually inspired and motivated for the first time in awhile. Having more help around here is making a major difference for me. Go team.

Anyone think Anna's hair looks a little red?

Tuesday Tutorials : Christine Middlecamp : "Almost Perfect" Layout

    6a00d83451bb3569e201157098a33c970c-500wi

This week Tuesday Tutorials welcomes Christine Middlecamp.

Christine's work is all about the details.

I really appreciate that a big part of her creative process is the craft of building each page. I see the layers she creates as a metaphor for the layers we all accumulate in our lives from moment to moment, year to year. I love that I can look at her work and see all kinds of interesting combinations of elements to try out on my own projects.

Growing as a creative person often involves "trying on" different styles as we come to discover what is just right for us. One of the things I hope you take away from this tutorial series is the opportunity to be inspired by people who may approach things differently than the way you naturally create.

For today's tutorial Christine has put together a great set of PDF instructions for you to download that showcases her entire approach step by step. True to her individual style her instructions are just as detailed as the pages she creates. Thanks so much for participating Christine!

    Here's a look into Christine's process:

    Collage

    6a00d83451bb3569e201157098a3d9970c-800wi

Most scrapbookers are collectors by nature. We love to collect product to use on projects. Who doesn’t look forward to the latest releases produced by some of our favorite manufacturers every Summer and Winter during the popular event, CHA? It’s this time of year that I often run across links to sneak peeks of new product when visiting some of my favorite scrapbooking websites. I follow the trail of mentioned links in hopes of finding inspiring, newly designed products. I establish a long list of must-haves and patiently wait for the new products to reach store shelves. I’m fully aware that inspiration is right around the corner following CHA, and that by adding new scrapbook items to my collection, I’ll be motivated to try new techniques and build on old ideas needing update.

My heavily detailed scrapbooking style is the result of many years of collecting paper goods. I use an assortment of products to create multi-layered layouts that can often take up to two days to complete. Before starting a layout, I organize small piles of supply items around my work area, including rub-ons, label stickers, letter stickers, word stickers, stamps, chipboard pieces, die-cuts and more. I’m of the philosophy that if things are organized and accessible, more can be accomplished. I’m also inclined creatively to work with a large variety of paper goods. To create these detailed layouts, selection is key. My collection of paper goods is ultimately what drives my work. Without it, my scrapbooking style would be very different.

Lately I’ve been inspired by the retro-kitschy scrapbook products being put out there by manufactures and digital designers. They’re fun, interesting and a great way to offset an otherwise traditional layout. For my layout tutorial, I focused on using pastels, vintage elements, and retro inspired patterns to create a softly spoken layout about my son.

    IMG_1494

I use a host of scrapbooking techniques when working on layouts. There are a select few I use over and over again. Some of them have evolved over time, but for the most part, they remain the same. I depend on them to build heavily detailed layouts. In supplement of the tutorial, I’ve put together a small compilation of those techniques I can’t live without when scrapbooking. Find them below:

    PATTERNED PAPERS
Pattern paper is a great way to carry a theme throughout a layout. It doesn’t have to be specific to the theme though! In this layout, I spoke of my son’s blooming personality. I love watching him grow and evolve as a child. I think every mother enjoys watching her children grow up. My pattern paper choices are reflective of the happiness I feel when I’m with him. I’m especially fond of the “lemon” paper. It’s rhythmic, bright and does a great job of capturing the essence of the layout.

    IMG_1502

    COLLAGE GROUPINGS
Creating miniature collages is easier than you think. The key is locating a place for the collage on your layout. Pay attention to direction. Follow the lines. Where do your eyes take you when looking at your layout? Find an intersection on your layout and create a collage! The task of creating the collage might take a little extra time, but it’s a practical way to add detail. Collages don’t have to be perfect! The only rule of thumb I follow is to maintain a relationship between the items in the collage via proximity and direction. Keep things close together and pay attention to whether something is horizontal or vertical.

    IMG_1547

    SIMPLE LAYERING
The basis of layering doesn’t have to be complicated. Actually, layering is a “simple” technique. It’s a matter of putting one thing on top of another. It’s the collection of “layers” that ultimately completes the heavily detailed appearance of my layouts. In the example above, I combined a sticker, chipboard piece and flower w/pearl. The simplicity of the combination is charming and sweet.

    IMG_1573

    POP-DOT DIMENSION
Need a lift? Foam Core Pop Dots find their way on my layouts all the time. If an area of collage is feeling “dull”, bring one of the elements off the page with a pop-dot. I actually struggled with this area of the layout. The alpha stickers felt flat, even with the fabric brad and felt flower. By “popping” the resin flower off the page, the area’s awakened and the title of the layout is more noticeable.

    IMG_1578

    HAND-MADE LAYERED FLOWERS
I rarely use flowers “as-is”. I enjoy layering flowers with other kinds of scrapbook supply items like label stickers, die-cut flowers, cardstock, paint, glitter, brads, epoxy stickers, buttons and rhinestones. I use a combination of all these items along with pop-dots to create hand-made layered flowers. I have small drawers in my scrapbook area devoted to color coordinated die-cut pieces ideal for using with flowers. It’s my favorite technique. Even though most of my layouts are about my young son, I still use flowers on almost all of his layouts. I simply can’t go without.

    IMG_1611

    WORKING WITH LINES
Lines on a layout are like roads on a map. They create flow and structure. You wouldn’t know which direction to go if they weren’t there. Lines are easy to add to a layout. I like to use thin paper strips, borders, titles, repetitive elements, and large embellishments for creating directional movement on my layouts.

    Weekend Photos & Workshop Input

    4th

[ Half circle accent available through Designer Digitals ]

My in-laws have a great tradition of waking up early on the 4th of July to either watch (or on some years, run) the annual Butte to Butte 10K. With hot coffee and scones from Great Harvest we sat in their driveway and cheered on nearly 5000 runners as they made their way up a really big hill.

It was totally inspiring to see all kinds of people of all shapes and sizes trekking up the hill. I think I want to be one of the people doing it next year.

A special hello to the two women who waved as they ran by and told me they were scrapbooking their run.

    Run

    Anna

The rest of the day was spent resting, cooking with family, and being silly (see photo below).

In the evening I stayed in with Anna (honoring/maintaining her current sleep schedule) while the boys went and watched the local fireworks show downtown. Simon fell asleep in Grandpa Gary's lap.

As Chris put him to bed Simon said, "I like the fireworks. The fireworks make me happy."

    SUGGESTIONS WELCOME

The biggest project I am working on right now is preparing for my 3-month online workshop at Big Picture Scrapbooking called Yesterday & Today. This workshop will run from October through December as part of the Four Experts series.

As I go about building the class I am looking for input/suggestions from potential students about what you would like to see covered in this workshop:

What would you like to learn about scrapbooking your past?
What would you like to learn about scrapbooking your present?
What would you like to learn about scrapbooking yourself?

Anything else you would like to see/learn in this workshop?

    And the giveaways go to...

So fun & interesting to read through the comments this weekend answering the "I would love to be..." question. Some were happy, some sad, some sentimental, some hopeful - thank you for sharing them here.

And peace to those of you who need it...

    Paper clutter-a
One person will receive a spot in Simplify 101's
Organize Your Paper Clutter Online Workshop.

Paper, paper everywhere! That paper mountain growing on your countertop represents a loss of freedom, a loss of control, and a nagging feeling in your gut that something important isn’t getting attended to. Your paper, and the feelings it creates, makes it hard to relax, focus or even have fun.

Here’s the good news: there is a better way! With the right paper organizing systems in place—those created with you, your paper, and your home in mind—you can free yourself from paper clutter and the stress that comes along with it. In Organize Your Paper Clutter, you’ll learn a step-by-step process on how to decide if you need a piece of paper (and for how long!) and how to organize it so you’ll find it again right when you need it! Your piles (and your stress!) will be replaced by organizing systems you love, and feelings of confidence, relief and peace of mind!

Class begins July 14th and ends September 1. For more a more detailed description click here.

If you’ve never taken an online organizing workshop before, you may be wondering if they really work. Could an online workshop really make a difference? Organizing 101 recently set up some new pages on their website so you can see how they work, get answers to frequently asked questions, and find out what past workshop participants had to say about their experiences in our workshops.
